12 APOSTLES

LIMESTONE FORMATIONS

port campbell NATIONAL PARK, VICTORIA

be mesmerised by the alluring ocean stacks

raw beauty in it’s most natural form

Erosion of the mainland coast's limestone cliffs began 10 to 20 million years ago, with the stormy Southern Ocean & blasting winds gradually wearing away the softer limestone to form caves in the cliffs.

The caves eventually became arches, and when these collapsed, rock stacks of up to 45-metres high were left isolated from the shore, resulting in the iconic “12 Apostles”.

The 12 Apostles are a series of towering limestone pillars rising from the wild seas, but they won’t be standing forever (in fact there wasn’t even 12 to start with!) just as they were formed over centuries of erosion, so too will they disappear - a chance of your lifetime to be captivated by their allure.

Every day of the year hundreds of people gaze at these rock formations from the coastal viewing platforms, mesmerised. So many stunning photos in all the various coastal conditions & light - mother nature at her finest :)
